Abstract

Abstract Recent results and extensive background information on a number of heavy-fermion compounds serve to illustrate the phenomena and concepts involved. The large mass enhancement common to these materials is seen to signal the importance of strong correlation, which, more often than not, leads to a departure from the Fermi-liquid state. The resulting “non-Fermi liquids” await fuli characterization and a proper name.
