Abstract

We review soft and hard fragmentation of heavy quarks into heavy mesonswith special emphasis onthe Peterson model and those currently obtainedfrom leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. We reduce the hardfragmentation functions to the Peterson form, maintaininga stronginteraction coupling constant and meson decay constant/wavefunction atthe origin of the non-relativistic meson bound state. This form is assumedto be useful when a light degree of freedom is involved in heavy meson andbaryon fragmentation. We investigate heavy baryon production in variouscases when one, two and three heavy quarks are involved inthe formation ofsuch states. We demonstrate thebehaviour of fragmentation functions as wellas their total fragmentation probabilities.
