Abstract

A recent study found that rising heavy alcohol use by women — a relatively new phenomenon — has contributed to the increasing sex disparity in the suicide mortality rate. Now, more women than men die from suicide committed while intoxicated. Until 2018, the prevalence of intoxication and suicide mortality had been increasing for both men and women, but women had a notably higher increase in both, according to the study, which looked at data from 2003 to 2018. The increase was particularly significant in women ages 65 and older.
