Abstract

A Tian–Calvet microcalorimeter has been used at 25 °C to measure the heats of the exchange between K+ and Li+ as a function of the ionic composition of commercial Dowex 50W exchange resins of the following divinylbenzene contents: 1, 4, 8, and 16%. The heats, which are exothermic for the forward reaction, where K+ replaces Li+ on the resin, and endothermic for the reverse direction, increase with the degree of cross-linking. A sharp variation in the heat with ionic composition of the resin is observed for the forward exchange at low K+, and for the reverse exchange at low Li+ content. These results are consistent with a non-uniformity of the resin.
