Abstract

AbstractThis article provides an introduction to heat transfer theory. Then the important application area of heat exchangers is extensively treated. The modes of heat transfer are introduced and major definitions are presented. Correlations for convective heat transfer are provided and heat transfer of extended surfaces, as well as composite walls, is briefly introduced. Functioning and classification of heat exchangers are discussed. Common methods for analysis, design, rating and sizing are given. Plate heat exchangers, shell‐and‐tube heat exchangers, compact and regenerative heat exchangers are considered. Special applications are also discussed.
