Abstract

A series of experiments were performed for the purpose of determining the heat transfer, and friction coefficients in smooth and rough tubes for dilute solutions of Polyethelyne oxide (“Polyox”) in water. Tests were conducted with solutions containing 10ppm and 50ppm of the polymer respectively. Typical results for the smooth tube showed that the friction coefficient was reduced by a factor of 3 and the heat transfer coefficient by a factor of 5. For the rough tube the coefficients were reduced even more drastically. The effectiveness of the polymer decreased in the range of high Reynolds numbers and this decrease was ascribed to the deterioration of the polymer.
