Abstract

An experimental investigation of dimple-shape roughness element arranged in angular fashion has been carried out to see the effect on heat transfer and friction characteristics of rectangular duct solar air heater. Duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 11, relative roughness pitch (p/e) in the range of 10–20, relative roughness height (e/D) in the range of 0.021–0.036, angle of arc (α) in the range of 45°−75°, and Reynolds number (Re) ranges from 3600 to 18 000. The effects of relative roughness pitch (p/e) and angle of arc (α) on heat transfer and friction factor have been discussed. It has also been observed that thermohydraulic performance of roughened solar air heater increases with the increase in Reynolds number. As there is an increase in Reynolds number which increases the heat transfer, it also increases pumping power which is higher in comparison to heat transfer.
