Abstract

This paper describes a heat-resistant liquid crystal light modulator, which contains a 20-µm-thick polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film comprising tolane nematic liquid crystal with a high nematic-isotropic phase-transition temperature of 160°C and a three-dimensional fine polymer network of polyacrylate formed by means of photopolymerization-induced phase separation. The light modulator with an electrically controlled light scattering function can operate in the wide temperature range from room temperature to 120°C with excellent thermal stability. A new light-controllable spot luminaire system using the light modulator and a 575 W high-intensity metal halide lamp is also demonstrated with a high extinction ratio of more than 100 for illumination of television studios and stages.
