Abstract

Heat pumps have not yet gained widespread acceptance in the field of waste heat recovery. The interest in energy conservation brought about recent fuel price increases has caused the heat pump to be considered for many applications; however, few industrial heat pumps have been installed in the U.K., partly because of the relatively unproven nature of the system and partly due to the difficulties of matching a sink and source and maintaining the high utilisation necessary if a heat pump is to prove an attractive investment. This article summarises the technical and economic criteria which must be met before a heat pump can be expected to provide an adequate return on investment.
