Abstract

The results of a collaborative study of heat integration aspects in an industrial crude preheat system are presented in this paper. A mass/heat exchange-based modelling framework is employed to consider heat integration possibilities that involve different stream mixing and intermediate stream processing, while issues as heat exchange efficiency and utilization of heat transfer area are explicitly addressed. Heat exchange matches, heat load distribution and exchanger allocation are optimized based on an existing heat exchanger network. Trade-offs between fuel consumption and steam production are systematically studied, considering simulataneously operating issues and network structural changes.
