Abstract

AbstractBased on temperature logging data of 20 boreholes and thermal conductivities of 39 rock samples, 20 heat flow values are calculated in the Qinshui Basin, Shanxi Province, China. The results show that the heat flow values range from 44.8mW/m2 to 101.8mW/m2, and the average is 62.7±15.2mW/m2, and that the present geothermal gradient varies from 20.9°C/km to 47.6°C/km with the mean value of 28.2±10.3°C/km in the basin. Similarities of the distribution of heat flow with that of coal‐bed methane‐bearing capacity of the upper and the lower main coal beds in the area suggest that the present geothermal conditions reflect the characteristics of the fossil geothermal background during the formation period of coal‐bed methane in the basin to some extent.
