Abstract

The investigation results for thermal conditions of a model high-speed magnetic fluid shaft seal are presented. Approximate formulae to calculate the amouut of the power loss due to viscous dissipation on a single-stage magnetic fluid seal with a different configuration of a focussing structure are given. The analysis is made of the effect of heat flux through the focussing tooth on temperature distribution in the sealing fluid layer. A simple relationship is obtained to calculate the heat flux to be carried away in order to decrease maximum temperature of the magnetic fluid to some limited value. The comparison of local heat flux distribution obtained over the stage with a triangular tooth exhibited qualitative agreement with the results of numerical calculation of the temperature field of the shaft surrounded by a multiple stage magnetic fluid seal. The device for the experimental study of thermal conditions of the magnetic fluid seal (MFS) is described.
