Abstract
We present specific heat measurements of (R, Pr)Ba 2Cu 3O 7 (R=Y, Gd) in external fields up to 11 T. The results are analyzed in terms of crystalline electric field (CEF) effects and indicate that in these systems Pr appears to be trivalent rather than tetravalent.
