Abstract

Heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) is a promising approach to increase the magnetic recording areal density beyond 1 Tb/in2. In a HAMR system, an optical near field transducer (NFT) is used to locally increase the temperature of recording media so that the writing head can write information on the recording media. Various types of NFT designs have been investigated to improve the optical efficiency and the shape of the optical beam on the recording media [1]-[2]. However, the effects of the recording media structure on the performance of the NFT are not well understood yet. In this work, we study the effect of modification of the recording media structure using dielectric materials to increase the field enhancement and obtain a desirable beam profile in the recording layer.
