Abstract

Abstract Detailed heat or mass transfer rate predictions are made using a finite difference computer model for laminar flow in an axisymmetric sudden expansion. The structure of the recirculation zone and the distribution of mass transfer rate downstream of the expansion are calculated as functions of Reynolds number, inlet velocity profile, geometry and Schmidt number. It is shown that a Couette flow analysis of the appropriate scaled equations gives the essential details of the mass transfer behaviour.
