Abstract

The basic principles of both heart-cutting and comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC) are herein provided. Shortcomings of one-dimensional GC are given, along with the benefits and opportunities, as well as potential limitations of both types of MDGC approaches. Theory is kept to a minimum while space is devoted to practical issues, mainly related to transfer devices, along with information on the main optimization aspects. The two MDGC technologies are different and complementary, and if used when necessary, can give outstanding results.
