Abstract
In this paper I approach the eco-maternal from two angles: first by exploring the ecological aspects of my own mother’s subjectivity, primarily her passionate love of nature and how it has shaped my own desires and trajectories; and second by exploring the trans-subjectivity of our collective mother, Mother Earth. I begin with a story about a trip I took to Alaska and the enigmatic messages that led me there. I also tell a story of encounters with the sublime, and of disintegration and transformation through jouissance. Along the way, I weave in theories on desire from Lacan, Laplanche, and Bracha Ettinger in an effort to conceptualize eco-maternal subjectivity, and to consider how adopting an eco-maternal mindset might lead to positive outcomes for humanity and the planet.
