Abstract

0 ver thr last decade a completely new form of treatment has evolved for end-stage pulmonary vascular disease and chronic lung disease including cystic fibrosis. Lung and heart-lung transplantation has now progressed from an experimental and innovati1.e stage to an established therapeutic option. ‘I‘he c,xclusion criteria for potential recipients and donors have decreased as experience has been gained maintaining good results. Standardization of surgical technique has produced similar results in different centers worldwide, and monitoring of graft function with daily spirometty and transbronchial lung biopsy have enabled early diagnosis of lung rejection or infection and thus e&ctive treatment. Lung and heart-lung transplantation arc now established treatments for end-stage puhnonal y vascular disease and chronic lung disease.
