Abstract

Heart diseases in infants and children can be classified as either congenital or acquired. The majority of congenital lesions are structural heart defects. Inborn errors of metabolism can produce heart disease that is also, technically, congenital. Acquired heart diseases can be subclassified into myocardial diseases (myocarditis, cardiomyopathy), valvular diseases (rheumatic fever, infective endocarditis), other inflammatory diseases such as Kawasaki’s disease, and arrhythmias (tachyarrhythmia and bradyarrhythmias).
