Abstract

An interval of eight years separates the first and second editions of this book. There are over 300 additional pages in the new edition, primarily a consequence of updating most chapters. There are five new chapters; several have been totally redone, and the illustrations are improved. The book is well organized; the format is that of the usual clinical textbook. The subject material is appropriate although a few minor sections are of debatable significance. The exposition is uniformly clear; the writing, multi-authored, is modern medical in style. The bibliography is comprehensive. The most notable additions are the chapters on dextrocardia, single ventricle and chamber localization by R. Van Praagh. These represent an attempt to clarify inversions, transpositions, and single ventricles. The result is the most understandable discussion of these topics presently available.
