Abstract

Cairo is a city wellknown for its noisy and crowded traffic. The job nature of traffic policemen in Cairo necessitates standing beside traffic light signals to observe that car drivers obey these signals. In this study road traffic noise was measured at different places in Cairo and hearing threshold was determined among 126 traffic policemen and 50 controls (office policemen). Road traffic noise ranged from 72 to 110 dB (A). The highest values were observed at railway crossings and when drivers used their horn (which is frequent). Mean hearing threshold of traffic policemen was significantly higher than that of the controls. The pattern of hearing impairment of traffic policemen was typical for that induced by noise. This was still obvious after age correction of the hearing threshold. The results indicate that road traffic noise in Cairo constitute a hazard for hearing of those whose job necessitates continuous and long-term exposure to it. Better regulation of traffic and strict control of the use of car horns are needed. The use of ear protectors may be recommended for traffic policemen.
