Abstract

A group of twenty-three Merino ewes were tested for their ability to discriminate between their own and an alien lamb at a distance. Most of them (nineteen of twenty-three) were able to recognize their own young at a distance of 10 m. Eighteen of the twenty-three mothers, selected at random, were tested with recorded bleatings of lambs. They displayed a significant preference for the bleating of their own lambs. These results suggest that hearing plays an important role in the distance recognition of the lamb by its mother.
