Abstract

Background: The classic type of hearing loss described in chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is conductive. However, sensorineural hearing loss is increasingly being recognised in this condition. Objective: Our aims were to assess the hearing threshold among Nigerians with uncomplicated chronic suppurative otitis media, to find out the type(s) of hearing loss in these patients, and to quantify and compare hearing loss in unilateral and bilaterally diseased ears of these Nigerians with uncomplicated CSOM. Methods: This is a prospective study of Nigerians treated for uncomplicated CSOM at the Ear Clinics of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (Enugu, Nigeria). Results: Bilateral ear disease was found in 54 (60%) of the patients while 36 (40%) had unilateral ear disease, giving 144 diseased ears from 90 patients. A mild degree of conductive hearing loss was found, which worsened with increasing age of the patients and duration of disease in both unilateral and bilateral diseased ears. There was no statistically significant sensorineural hearing loss. Conclusion: The type of hearing loss in these patients with uncomplicated CSOM is the characteristic conductive variety. There was no difference in the type of hearing loss between the unilateral and bilateral diseased ears.
