Abstract
This paper describes the attitude reference design used by the three successful observatories of the High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. A stellar inertial attitude reference with strapdown rate integrating gyros, star trackers, and a general purpose computer comprised the common attitude control subsystem of the observatories. HEAO-2 achieved accurate pointing of a telescope system equipped with the largest and most precise grazing incidence x-ray mirror ever used in space. This observatory autonomously maneuvered to selected targets, acquired guide stars for attitudeupdating, and positioned unique experiments into its telescope focal point. Performance data showed maneuver accuracies of 1 arcmin and pointing accuracies of 2 to 5 arcsec have been achieved. Additional performance results are presented to support the extrapolation of the designs to future applications.
