Abstract

Abstract In qualitative health research qualitative social research methods are applied to study problems at the interface of health or illness and social life. Qualitative research is an umbrella term of research characterized by openness, subjectivity, process orientation, and interpretation of meaning. Interviews, group discussions, observations, and document analysis are the main modes of enquiry. Critiques of qualitative health research that is predominantly related to issues of sample size and generalizability ignore central concepts of qualitative methodology. Qualitative health research has been discussed within the premises of an evidence-based medicine. It has made valuable contributions to the field of health research.
