Abstract
Health promotion is the opportunistic encouragement of patients to manage their own health. Health promotion is an integral part of general practice and aims to improve patient, population and planetary health. During COVID-19, healthy behaviours have declined and health inequalities have widened in the UK. Now is a good time to encourage patients to engage with their overall health and well-being and to provide extra support to disadvantaged patients. GPs have a crucial role in helping to empower patients and guide them towards healthier living. This article will explore health promotion within primary care and suggest practical ways to implement health promotion holistically in practice.
