Abstract
The Rasch model is a probabilistic mathematical model that is based on item response theory. It was developed by Danish mathematician Georg Rasch (Rasch, 1960) in the field of education and its use has increased exponentially in health over the past decade. The Rasch model can be employed to develop new instruments or to assess and/or refine existing instruments. It offers a sophisticated method for investigating the dimensionality of items on an assessment instrument (i.e. the extent to which items capture information about a common underlying construct), whether the instrument total score provides interval or ordinal level measurement and the relative difficulty of each of the instrument items.
