Despite the presence of many homosexuals among health care consumers, the health care system has traditionally functioned as if all consumers are heterosexual. This has served gay men and women badly, since they do have some unique health, care needs. Familiarity with these needs, and commitment to the social work values of self-determination and non-judgemental service. prepare the social worker lo serve as educator. ombudsman and advocate for gays and lesbians in the health care system.
