Abstract

A grass roots effort known as Oregon Health Decisions is involving Oregonians in local discussion groups and town meetings, preparatory to a statewide meeting on bioethical issues that is scheduled for October 1984. Oregon citizens have also been polled about particular issues. According to early tabulations, most of them agree that patients' rights to choose or refuse treatment need better safeguards and that Oregon's health system should provide incentives to encourage healthy lifestyles. Opinion is divided on whether Oregon should provide unlimited care for those who cannot pay, and on whether everyone should be guaranteed access to any available lifesaving technology.
