Abstract

We often hear a certain type of politician declaiming that Britain is a nanny state. This is a term redolent of privilege, paternalism and public schools: the collective elderly right-wing political class who cannot shake off their mixed feelings about the controlling women who helped to form their schoolboy attitude to the concept of ‘care’.
