Abstract

Definitions of health behavior are provided and the key health behaviors influencing health, morbidity and mortality are reviewed. Key models of the basis of health behaviors are reviewed including the health belief model, theory of planned behavior, protection motivation theory, social cognitive theory, health action process approach and implementation intentions. A critique of existing models is provided along with reviews of recent research on the role of habit, dual process models of health behavior, maintenance of health behavior, and behavior change techniques.
