Abstract

This monograph examines health care and family planning (FP) combined or uncombined in community-based execution formats. Part 1 discusses issues in community-based distribution giving information on field visits and problems issues in integrating FP and health programs a comparative view of 3 programs and selection of interventions. Part 2 discusses contraceptive services: risk/benefit considerations in the choice of methods and examines a case from rural Bangladesh. Part 3 examines adaptation of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) to community based development (CBD) its value as a health component in FP distribution programs implementation issues and field results for a program in Egypt. Part 4 discusses antihelminthics in CBD programs and case studies from Columbia and Brazil. Nutrition activities and CBD are the topic of Part 5. Case studies for nutrition and family planning in Bali Indonesia and one for nutrition family planning and added health components in Guatemala are presented. Immunization in CBD is illustrated again for Guatemala in Part 6. Other therapeutic interventions appear in Part 7. Selection and description in general and for a specific case in Zaire are examined as well as low cost family planning and maternal and child health combination of services in rural Nigeria. Part 8 describes training of CBD workers for intervention and promotion with a description of a Sudan community-based health and family planning project. A final section outlines and describes operations research applicable to CBD process and program improvement.
