Abstract

This article is an introduction to the International Interdisciplinary Symposium on Health and Development in Africa held at the University of Bayreuth from June 2-4 1982. This conference was the first of its kind to bring together economists sociologists lawyers doctors anthropologists and specialists in African studies in discussions on the interaction of health and development within the framework of the cultural linkage of numerous African countries. A brief introduction in regard to the economic growth of certain developing countries the cultural identity of the people concerned the complexity of the health situation and the standard of health care in Africa is given.
