Abstract

Abstract Three complementary models, describing the influence of behavior on physical functioning and on physical health, are presented. In the first place, the importance of the subject's continuous monitoring and interpreting of the signals from its body is stressed. This mechanism is involved in the production of feelings like hunger, fatigue and pain. Secondly, attention is drawn to the well-known fact that the physiological response typically accompanying emotional reactions can lead to alterations and possible disfunction of physical systems. Thirdly, it is argued that there are a number of basic life functions which are necessarily regulated via behavior. Feeding, resting, regulation of temperature, sexuality and hygiene are of vital biological importance and are typically regulated behaviorally. This implies that health is dependent on behavior. The ways in which behavior therapy can influence these health related behaviors are indicated.
