Abstract

Thanks to a strong intrinsic regenerative potential, small to moderate injuries to normal bones often spontaneously heal [1]. At the local level, this regenerative potential is contributed by the periosteum and bone marrow, both of which provide an abundant source for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) [2]. Conceivably, this potential in bone marrow may be harvested as bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) to aid bone regeneration at other larger defects. We recently found that small corticotomies created to the tibia do indeed enhance MSC content in BMAC. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether taking some bone marrow away during the healing phase jeopardizes the spontaneous healing at the donor site. This study was undertaken to address that question.
