Abstract

The λ-transition has been studied in bulk liquid 4He and in saturated films (thickness 14<d<23 nm) using viscous shear waves (penetration depth ≃20 nm) as a probe of the spatial variation of the super fluid density and viscosity near a solid/liquid interface and in superfluid films. The order parameter in Hell has a healing length a=0.1 ε-2/3 nm, where ε=|1-T/Tλ|, for ε<10-2. Above Tλ the viscosity near a wall also exhibits a spatial variation on the same length scale.
