Abstract

There are a number of differences between the treatment of head injury in football and the treatment of head injuries arising in the general population from motor vehicle accidents and other causes. Firstly, there is the potential for prevention by appropriate measures such as training, appropriate rules and laws and the wearing of protection. Secondly, there is a degree of deliberateness of bodily contact in the so-called contact sports and in particular the collision sports. Thirdly, there are issues of management and decisions about return to play for those with mild head injury and rehabilitation for those with more catastrophic injuries. The risk of repeat injury and the aftermath of repeated injury is important.
