Abstract

Toward the end of the documentary Hoop Dreams (1994), Coach PingaBruce Robbins tore of St. Joseph's pronounces judgment on William Gates's high school basketball career, which has just ended. He tells the camera that William has had good career, not a great career. Since Coach Pingatore is something like the film's villain-its most visible representative of the systematic exploitation of young black athletes, and its most enthusiastic spokesman for a win-at-all-costs, write-off-your-family philosophy that William explicitly repudiates at the end-it is tempting to take his statement as a neat inversion of the film's moral.
