Abstract

Some ED patients undergoing head CT (HCT) for minor head injury (MHI) do not meet the definition for mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), which requires confusion, amnesia, focal neuro deficit or loss of consciousness. Clinical decision rules can reduce the use of HCT in patients with MTBI, but their effectiveness for MHI is not well studied. We developed a pathway for ordering HCT in MHI (based on the ACEP clinical policy) and conducted a quality improvement (QI) project in 4 community and 2 academic EDs to improve appropriateness of HCT.
