Abstract

Selective adsorption measurements for He on the Ag(110) surface, yielding five bound states with energies -4.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02, -2.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02, -0.92\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02, -0.31\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02, and -0.095\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.015 meV, are reported. These results confirm that both the Hartree-Fock energy and the total energy in the repulsive region of the He-Ag potential are proportional to the unperturbed electron density of the metal and yield experimental values for the proportionality constants.
