Abstract

Individuals with HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection experience accelerated progression to severe liver disease. Although these patients may benefit from prompt HCV treatment, few receive it. To determine why, researchers reviewed data from 845 HIV/HCV-coinfected patients who had received HIV care at a Baltimore clinic at least twice in 2 consecutive years from mid-1998 through 2003 (median age, 40; 63% men; 85% African American). A total of 277 patients (33%) were referred for HCV care in the on-site viral hepatitis clinic, but only 185 completed at least one visit there.
