Abstract

Auto-ignited combustion in HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine highly depends on temperature and composition of the cylinder charge. In this paper, a robust HCCI combustion controller is developed based on a control-oriented HCCI engine model. The controller indirectly manages the HCCI combustion by controlling burned gas fractions in intake and exhaust manifolds. To compensate steady state error in combustion phasing, an outer-loop controller is introduced to adjust the set-points of burned gas fractions to drive the combustion phasing to a desired value. The designed controller is also evaluated through experiments with a single-cylinder HCCI engine.
