Abstract
This article describes the use of a simulated assessment method to assess the competence of HCAs in taking routine patient observations. In the context of the expanding role of healthcare support workers and discussions about training requirements, it outlines the related national and local standards in this area. The preparation and process of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is then described, followed by an interpretation of the results. Perceived challenges in using this assessment tool are outlined, as well as opportunities for HCAs and their managers.
