Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) are a modern day and worldwide healthcare reality that affect hundreds of millions of people (World Health Organization (WHO), 2005). They can complicate the delivery of patient care, cause death and disability, promote resistance to antibiotics, and add further costs to those already incurred (Pittet and Donaldson, 2005).
