Abstract

In April 1982, we encountered a hemolysate having an abnormal hemoglobin band very slightly anodic to Hb A on isoelectric focusing. Structural analysis demonstrated that the hemoglobin was identical to Hb Hope [β136 (H 14) Gly → Asp], which was first found by Minnich et al in an American Negro family in 1965 (1). We report the first observation of Hb Hope in a Japanese family.
