Abstract

In this paper we use qualitative data to examine and highlight the differences between hazing and peer bullying in the organizational context. Though various literatures have examined both of these constructs, rarely have them been compared and contrasted. We also contribute to the management literature by taking the view of the newcomer (the target of the hazing or bullying done by coworkers). Lastly, we contribute to the socialization literature by considering the role played by negative initiation rites employeed by established employees on the socialization of newcomers.
