Abstract

Since we last discussed contrast media1 several reviews of the toxicity of these substances have been published. The currently used preparations are remarkably safe, but troublesome reactions do occasionally occur and some of these are predictable. Doctors who request an investigation are often ignorant of the hazards, or unaware when a reaction has occurred during a procedure. The present discussion is confined to iodine-containing media. These are, of course, all contraindicated in patients with iodine hypersensitivity, and they are also best avoided in patients with thyrotoxicosis.
