Abstract
fused perioperatively (predominantly in cardiac and orthopaedic surgery), and 53% are transfused for medical reasons in the management of haematological disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, and malignancies. Patients more than 70 years of age receive 50% of the units transfused with an equal distribution between men and women for red cells; but more platelets and fresh frozen plasma are transfused in men. Although the vast majority of transfusions undoubtedly benefit the recipients, they are not without hazards, and inappropriate or inadequate transfusion is common.
