Abstract

Despite a recent revival of interest in the subject of “late style,” the issue of Haydn's late style has not received the attention it deserves. Haydn's The Creation can be used as a means of understanding the nature of the composer's late style, particularly within a context of the technique of parataxis. The pastoralism of Haydn's oratorio can be seen as a perceived retreat from humanism, a step that connects his late style to Adorno's well-known critique of Beethoven's “later” late style.
