Abstract

In the February 2008 I&M Magazine, we learned how easy it was to spot passing satellites, the Shuttle, and even the International Space Station (ISS) from our back yards in an exper iment titled "Tonight There Are Hundreds of Visible Satellites in Orbit, How Many Can You Spot?" [1]. This experiment carries that theme one step farther. How would you like to actually talk with an astronaut on the ISS? Or query the internal sensors of an operating satellite? Or perhaps just use the onboard transmitter of a satellite as a relay to speak to someone on the other side of the world? It's not as hard as it sounds.
